Meriwether stands opposite the road into News Ferry.
A large frame house, typical of many found throughout Southside Virginia, Meriwether was built by James Nathaniel Terry around 1885.
Mr. Terry named the house after his famous ancestor Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark expeditions.
